PARENT AND STUDENT REMINDERS - SCHOOL BEGINS TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 8

Good Evening: I hope you are having a restful evening. I am reaching out to you with some reminders. School Begins - TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 8th. I am so excited to begin the year and cannot wait to see all of the children in their google classrooms. Please make sure your Chromebooks are on and they are in excellent working order. Normally our days begin at 9:00 a.m. in the breakfast room we created for the students to socialize and engage in conversations with their classmates. You will receive an invite for them to be able to come to their breakfast room every day until 9:15. On Tuesday the teachers will discuss that with the children in more detail. Classes begin with their teachers promptly at 9:15 a.m. everyday. The teacher will share with them their class code and invite to their meeting this weekend. Please make sure you check your email for the teachers invite and schedule. Parents you are welcome to join your child Tuesday in their classroom to ask any questions and to review expectations for the first 15 minutes. If you unable to stop in you will have more opportunities with an open house by their teachers and also through conferences with their teacher. It is very important the children log into their google classrooms prior to Tuesday. Their teacher will be sending an invite to join the class or classes followed by a google meets invite. The google meets invite is also visible in their classroom. Please look on the BANNER of their classroom and click on the link or the teacher will post it in the classroom where conversations take place. If you do not receive your invite or class code, please call me at 773-841-6392 to assist you. You will receive everything by tomorrow evening. Food insecurity is a challenge for so many families, especially during the Covid-19 Crisis. If your child was getting free or reduced-price lunch during the school year, you are eligible for a program called Pandemic-EBT, or P-EBT, which provides a one-time benefit of up to $342.00 per child. It covers the daily value of school meals your child would have received if schools were not closed due to the Pandemic. It can help your family provide much needed nutrition for your children during this time. But you have to apply soon! The application deadline is August 31st, 2020. P-EBT is available to any child and it does NOT impact your or your child’s citizenship or immigration status. NO social security number is required to apply. If your family currently receives SNAP, the benefits have already been loaded to your Link card. If your family does not receive SNAP, you can still apply for P-EBT online at www.abe.illinois.gov. Once approved, you will receive a debit card to buy food. You can contact your school or school district to complete a Free and Reduced-price Meal application, if you have not already done so. If you do that today, you can also apply for P-EBT today! The U.S. Census Bureau announced that it will be cutting short the census response period by 30 days, which leaves us with less than two months to make sure all Chicagoans fill out the census. Federal Census Bureau enumerators are now going door-to-door to follow up with households that have not responded. Only 56 percent of the City has responded, so we have a lot of work to do before the census website closes on September 30! Throughout our response to COVID-19, our top priority has been, and will continue to be, keeping our students and school communities safe. This is the Final Reopening Framework for the start of the 2020–21 school year. This framework gives CPS the flexibility to begin the school year learning at home and transition to hybrid learning once our public health experts determine it is safe to do so. Click here to read more Chicago Public Schools Proposes Progressive Reforms to School Resource Officer (SRO) Program Based on Feedback  The City of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) today announced several proposed reforms to the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, which will build on recent measures to help ensure SROs contribute to safe and welcoming school environments in the schools that choose to utilize police support. In addition to these reforms, which will be proposed in a revised intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that the Chicago Board of Education will consider on August 26, CPS also announced today a series of partnerships designed to improve training, analysis, and student involvement going forward. As of August 18, 55 schools have chosen to participate in the SRO program in 2020-21 with 17 opting to leave the program this year.   To read more click here Application round for Neighborhood Opportunity Fund to open Monday, Sept. 14 The Department of Planning and Development (DPD) will open grant applications for the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund on Monday, Sept. 14. Applications are due Friday, Nov. 6. DPD will host two informational webinars next week to help applicants prepare for the application process, one in English and one in Spanish. Pandemic EBT Link Card The State of Illinois is issuing all CPS students their own Pandemic EBT link card with up to $350 for its free lunch program. The parent is the applicant - the student is the recipient. This card will be loaded monthly until CPS resumes its regular in house teaching schedule, post-emergency Shelter-In-Place restrictions. The deadline to apply has been extended to August 31, 2020. IHDA (Illinois Housing Development Association) was given $396 million of CARES Act funding to provide affordable housing and emergency rental & mortgage assistance due to the COVID 19 crisis. - Emergency Rental Assistance application period is August 10 - August 21 - Emergency Mortgage Assistance application period is August 24 - September 4 These application periods may close early if all funds have been distributed. Applications for rental assistance must be initiated online by tenants, and also require landlord participation to complete the process. Chicago Connected Chicago Connected is a groundbreaking program that will provide free high-speed internet service to approximately 100,000 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students. This first-of-its-kind program will be one of the largest and longest-term efforts by any city to provide free, high-speed internet over the course of four years to increase internet access for students. According to Census data, an estimated 100,000 students lack access to high-speed internet in Chicago. In order to narrow the digital divide for CPS families, Chicago Connected will provide up to four years of high-speed internet for CPS families who are most in need. Families who are eligible for the program will receive a notification via email and text from CPS.
